The ongoing crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Sunday as a faction led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dissolved the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and inaugurated a caretaker panel.
The 13-member committee, tasked with managing the party’s affairs for 60 days, will oversee preparations for the party’s upcoming national convention. Abdulrahman Mohammed heads the panel, with Samuel Anyanwu as secretary. Other members include Kamaldeen Ajibade (national legal adviser), Umar Bature (national organising secretary), Kyari Grema, Janguda Mohammed, Okechukwu Osuana, Nwogu Olaka, Sandy Onor, Adenike Ogunse, Bisi Kolawole, Deji Doherty, and Ibrahim Aboki.
The move comes as the tenure of the PDP NWC elected in October 2021 is set to expire. Last month, a faction of the party supported by PDP governors, including Bauchi State’s Bala Mohammed and Oyo State’s Seyi Makinde, conducted a convention and elected a new NWC chaired by Kabiru Turaki. During that convention, Wike and several of his allies were expelled.
Rejecting their expulsion, the Wike faction has established a parallel NWC, Board of Trustees (BoT), and National Executive Committee (NEC), and in a tit-for-tat response, they have also expelled members of the Makinde-backed faction. The PDP crisis shows no signs of slowing as both factions consolidate their structures ahead of the national convention.
