national-assembly-abuja-2The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has issued a 21 day ultimatum to the management of the National Assembly to pay their allowances or risk indefinite industrial action.

The association in a letter entitled “21 day notice of intention to declare industrial dispute” dated 25 September 2013 vowed to disrupt the presentation of the 2014 Appropriation Bill if their demands were not met.

The association noted that the move to embark on industrial action was onconsequent upon National Assembly staff agitation demanding improvements on staff welfare review of the Legislative Duty Allowance, outfit, hazard and provision of effective working tools.

It said that members of the association are worried that inflation and economic down turn have completely depleted whatever income workers take home.

It added that the association has adopted “pragmatic, diligent and fair approaches including our earlier letter for which we sought to meet with the leadership of the National Assembly to sort out these challenges but to no avail.

“The PASAN NASS chapter hereby give you notice of 21 day ultimatum to respond to staff agitations as the union will have no choice given the pressure from staff than to declare industrial dispute at the expiration of 21 days with effect from today” it said.

The Clerk to the National Assembly in a letter dated 3rd August 2010 had written to the Minister of Finance requesting for the release of funds for the payment of Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure.

The association said that it believed that the funds had been released without the payment being reflected in its members’ salaries.
