Istanbul, Dec. 27, 2025 (Naija247news) – U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington does not intend to immediately follow Israel in recognising Somaliland as an independent state, even as Tel Aviv formally acknowledged the breakaway region on Friday.
Trump made the remarks during a telephone interview with the New York Post, describing the issue as “under study.” “I study a lot of things and always make great decisions and they turn out to be correct. Does anyone know what Somaliland is, really?” he asked.
The President appeared dismissive of Somaliland’s proposal to grant the U.S. access to a strategically located port on the Gulf of Aden, responding: “Big deal.”
Israel’s recognition of Somaliland comes amid growing interest from the Horn of Africa region in joining the Abraham Accords. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would relay the development to Trump during a scheduled meeting on Monday. Netanyahu also held a video call with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi to mark the diplomatic breakthrough.
Trump emphasised that discussions with Netanyahu would prioritise issues related to the Gaza Strip, including maintaining the ceasefire brokered in October and overseeing reconstruction efforts under a United Nations-approved framework.
The U.S. position signals caution in Africa’s strategically sensitive Horn region, reflecting Washington’s careful approach to recognition of breakaway territories despite Israeli precedent.
