Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, there has been a significant political shift in the Northern region, with key support groups of Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was formalized at an event held at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja, where Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the APC, and Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate, welcomed the defectors. The groups, which represent the 19 Northern states, expressed their decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 elections. They credited Senator Barau for his efforts in rallying support for Tinubu’s leadership in the region.
Under the banner of the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups, which mobilized support for the former vice president in 2023, the defectors pledged to work towards the success of President Tinubu’s re-election campaign. The coalition, which consists of women, youths, academics, farmers, traders, and other key sectors, played a pivotal role in Atiku’s campaign in the 2023 election.
Hon. Abubakar Malami, the coordinator of the Coalition, commended the group’s broad representation across ethnic and religious lines, highlighting their role in Atiku’s electoral support and their future commitment to Tinubu. The group also expressed appreciation for Senator Barau’s consistent efforts in supporting President Tinubu’s vision for the region.
Senator Barau, in his address, hailed the defection as a major boost for the APC, encouraging the new members to contribute to the success of the president’s administration. APC National Chairman Dr. Ganduje also lauded the defection, praising Senator Barau for his leadership and his role in facilitating this shift.
