The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has sealed a fuel station along the Owode-Apa axis in the Badagry area of Lagos over allegations of smuggling petroleum products. The National Coordinator of the Operation Whirlwind Unit, Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Kola Oladeji, disclosed this to newsmen at Badagry on Friday.
The Reason Behind the Shutdown
According to Oladeji, the fuel station, identified as Adeola Ade PLC, was sealed on October 4, 2025, following credible intelligence and thorough investigation that revealed infractions inconsistent with the standards and regulations governing petroleum retail operations in Nigeria. The NCS official stated that the facility was shut down for violating regulations and that the operators would face further regulatory action and sanction. The sealed facility has been handed over to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for further action.
Crackdown on Sharp Practices
The NCS has been intensifying efforts to crack down on sharp practices in the downstream sector. Oladeji emphasized that the service remains resolute in its mission to rid the sector of malpractice, protect consumers, and uphold the integrity of the national energy infrastructure. He assured that the NCS would continue to work with other agencies to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
Impact on Fuel Supply
The shutdown of the fuel station is expected to have a minimal impact on fuel supply in the area, as there are several other fuel stations nearby. However, the NCS’ action has sent a strong message to other operators in the sector, warning them to comply with regulations or face the consequences. The NCS’ efforts are aimed at ensuring that fuel is distributed fairly and that prices are stabilized, particularly during the festive season.
The shutdown of the fuel station is a clear indication of the NCS’ commitment to enforcing regulations and preventing smuggling activities in the country. As the festive season approaches, the NCS’ efforts are expected to help stabilize fuel prices and prevent artificial shortages.
