PROTEST TURNS UGGLY AS SECURITY FORCES CLASH WITH DEMONSTRATORS IN ABUJA

Tensions ran high in Abuja today as security operatives clashed with protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), leaving residents angry and workers stranded.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as police and military personnel fired shots and tear gas to disperse protesters, with organizer Omoyele Sowore and others seen fleeing for their lives. The protest, which had been given the green light by the Federal High Court in Abuja, was meant to be a peaceful demonstration, but it quickly turned violent as security forces moved in to block roads and restrict movement.

The court had restricted protesters from approaching sensitive government sites, including Aso Rock Villa, but the security forces’ actions were seen as excessive by many. “They just started shooting and throwing tear gas, people were running helter-skelter,” said one eyewitness. “It was like a war zone.”

Residents and workers in Abuja were caught in the crossfire, with reports of road closures and traffic congestion causing frustration and anger. The police had warned protesters to avoid restricted areas and refrain from provocative conduct, but it seems their message was ignored in the heat of the moment.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention since 2021, facing charges of terrorism and treason, which he denies. His trial is ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for October 21. The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign has been gaining momentum, with many calling for his release and an end to what they see as persecution by the Nigerian governments

The violent clash between security forces and protesters is a worrying development, and it’s clear that tensions are running high. As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is certain – the demand for Nnamdi Kanu’s release is not going away, and the Nigerian government will be under increasing pressure to respond to the growing outcry.
