Portugal have confirmed the appointment of former Belgium coach, Roberto Martinez as their new head coach.
Fernando Santos resigned from the position after they crashed out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after suffering a 1-0 loss to Morocco.
Martinez also resigned as the manager of Belgium after leading them to a group stage exit in Qatar.
He has now been saddled with the responsibility of leading Portugal’s talented crop of young players.
“I am very happy to represent one of the national teams with the best talent in the world,” said Martinez.
“I am very excited to be here. From the first time I spoke with the president of the federation I knew this was a sporting project that would excite me.
“I understand there are great expectations and big objectives, but there is a great team of people at the federation and I have great excitement that together we can achieve those objectives.”
Martinez will take charge of his first match against Liechtenstein in Euro 2024 qualifiers.
He will be aiming to do better than Fernando Santos, who led Portugal to Euro 2016 and 2018 Nations League trophies in his eight years in charge of Portugal.
