Ademola Lookman Crowned African Footballer of the Year

Ademola Lookman has been honored as the African Footballer of the Year, becoming the seventh Nigerian to receive this prestigious award.

The 27-year-old forward had an exceptional season with Atalanta in Serie A, contributing significantly to the team’s success. He scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions during the 2023-2024 season. Notably, Lookman netted a hat-trick in the Europa League final, leading Atalanta to a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen and securing their first European title.

On the international stage, Lookman played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s journey to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, scoring three goals throughout the tournament. His outstanding performances earned him a place in the AFCON Team of the Tournament.

Expressing his gratitude, Lookman stated, “This award is a blessing; to be recognized as the best player in Africa is something incredible.”

In the current season, Lookman has maintained his impressive form, scoring 11 goals in 19 matches, as Atalanta sits atop the Serie A standings.

Lookman joins the ranks of Nigerian football legends such as Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikpeba, Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, and Victor Osimhen, who have previously received the African Footballer of the Year award.

In the women’s category, Barbra Banda made history as the first Zambian to win the African Women’s Player of the Year award, following her remarkable contributions to Orlando Pride’s NWSL Championship victory.
