Maj-.Gen. Chris Olukolade)The Forum of Spokespersons in Security and Response Agencies (FOSSRA) says it will continue to observe the principle of “accuracy  and propreity” in providing information to the general public.

The Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said this on Thursday in Abuja at a round table with editors.

He said this would be achieved through enhanced and regular interaction with the media.

He said the forum hoped that through this it would improve on the accuracy of information given to Nigerians and the international community.

“We have also been mandated to ensure that our relationship with you does not break down at any time.

“We assure you that we will cherish this relationship and do all it takes to maintain it” he said.

Olukolade stressed the need for confidentiality on some issues that would be discussed because some of them touched on national security.

“We want to ensure that while interacting or passing information to you, we will observe elements of propriety as journalism rests on ethics and we would help you observe those ethics.

“We want you to observe the ethics guiding our profession as well.

“The more media practitioners understand what is happening, the better so that Nigerians can also understand what we are doing in providing security to the country” he said.

Olukolade also said it was important for editors to recognise the need to be accurate and guard the country’s security  while reporting on such issues.

He commended Nigerian journalists for their cooperation and understanding in dealing with security news.

“The Nigerian media is very cooperative and this has been a great relief from the harassment we would have gotten from the international media.

“They have also shown patriotism in understanding security issues and that is why we need this kind of forum to enhance their ability to be able to report these issues in the country” he said.
