LAGOS, Dec. 26, 2025 (Naija247news) — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday unveiled a 32-foot Eyo Monument at the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, describing it as a symbol of Lagos’ rich cultural heritage and identity.

Sanwo-Olu said the unveiling, though simple, marks a wholesome cultural celebration of the Eyo Adimu Orisa Festival and reflects the city’s depth of tradition.

“This unveiling is simple, yet very significant; it celebrates the Eyo Festival and what it represents to Lagos and our people,” the governor said, commending the monument’s creator, Dotun Popoola, for projecting Lagos as a hub of culture, creativity, and history.

The 32-foot monument, mounted on a six-foot base, was designed to narrate the story and history of Eyo in Lagos State, according to the CEO of the John Randle Centre, Qudus Onikeku. The centre also plans to produce a documentary on the festival, featuring custodian Erelu Abiola Dosumu, to further preserve its cultural significance.

Reacting to the unveiling, Erelu Kuti IV of Lagos, Erelu Abiola Dosumu, praised Sanwo-Olu for promoting cultural heritage alongside infrastructural development, noting that strong infrastructure supports cultural growth.

Popoola described the monument as a commitment to culture and tradition, intended to inspire pride, consciousness, and continuity among present and future generations.

The unveiling aligns with the centre’s mandate to educate, preserve, and showcase Yoruba culture, reinforcing Lagos’ position as a cradle of cultural heritage in Nigeria.
