The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has spoken out on Governor Douye Diri’s resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as “very embarrassing”. Wike’s reaction comes on the heels of Diri’s decision to leave the PDP, citing internal party issues.
PDP’s Self-Inflicted Wounds
According to Wike, Diri’s exit from the PDP was not surprising, given the party’s internal problems. As chairman of the PDP’s zoning committee for the elective national convention, Diri’s departure is seen as a significant blow to the party. Wike attributed the PDP’s woes to its failure to address internal issues, leading to the loss of key figures. He praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, saying it has brought about positive change and development in the country.
More PDP Defections Imminent?
Wike’s comments suggest that more PDP members might follow Diri’s footsteps and leave the party. With the PDP’s internal crisis showing no signs of abating, the party’s future looks uncertain. Meanwhile, some APC leaders have welcomed Diri’s decision, urging him to formally join the APC.
The PDP’s loss is undoubtedly a blow to the party’s already fragile morale. As the party grapples with internal issues, it remains to be seen how it will recover from the latest setback. One thing is certain, however: the PDP’s crisis is far from over.
