Tinubu Swears In Prof. Joash Amupitan as New INEC Chairman, Charges Him to Uphold Electoral Integrity

Date:

Abuja, Nigeria (Naija247news) — President Bola Tinubu has officially sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The swearing-in ceremony took place at exactly 1:50 pm inside the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, October 23, 2025.

During the brief but solemn ceremony, President Tinubu charged the new INEC Chairman to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, strengthen institutional independence, and ensure that every election under his leadership reflects the true will of the Nigerian people.

“The task before you is one of immense national importance. Protect the credibility of our elections and the sanctity of the people’s votes,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.

Professor Amupitan’s appointment followed the Senate’s confirmation after a rigorous screening session held on October 16, 2025. He succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure earlier this month.

A respected legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Amupitan is expected to bring both academic insight and judicial discipline to the electoral commission at a time when Nigeria faces increasing public demand for transparent, credible, and technology-driven elections.

Observers note that his immediate priorities will include electoral reforms, staff capacity building, and the deployment of credible election technology ahead of the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in several states.

The President also urged INEC under Amupitan’s leadership to maintain neutrality and work closely with political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies to promote confidence in the democratic process.

Meanwhile, several political analysts have described Amupitan’s swearing-in as a potential turning point for Nigeria’s democracy, citing his strong legal background and history of public service.
