Lagos, Nov. 1, 2025 (NAN) — Oyo Club claimed the second Senator Abiru Mixed Team Table Tennis Championship at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Teams from Nigeria, Benin, and Togo competed, with Oyo Club making history as the event’s second mixed doubles champions.
John Mathew and Iyanuoluwa Falana led Oyo to a 3-1 victory over Bayelsa’s Jamiu Ayanwale and Khadijat Okanlawon, winning 11-6, 14-12, 11-4, 10-12 in the mixed doubles. Sallamps Oil Kwara finished third through Abdulbasit Abdulfatai and Ajoke Ojomu.
In the women’s singles, Hope Udoaka defeated Halima Hussain 3-1 to secure gold after a tight opening game, while Azeez Wasiu triumphed in the men’s singles, beating Samuel Boboye 3-1 in an energetic final.
Oyo also claimed the women’s doubles as Khadijat Okanlawon and Halima Hussain overcame Hope Udoaka and Iyanuoluwa Falana.
Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru praised the tournament, saying it empowered young talents and promoted inclusivity and teamwork. He added that creating opportunities allows talent to flourish and friendships to grow.
Abiru noted that the mixed format reflected values of equity, collaboration, and mutual respect in sport and society. He applauded all athletes for their effort and conduct, saying each competitor was a champion. He also thanked partners, including the ITTF and NTTF, promising an even bigger and more inclusive next edition.
NTTF President Tayo Adesoji said the federation was revitalising grassroots table tennis to develop future stars. He pledged to nurture young players capable of surpassing icons like Aruna Quadri, Funke Oshonaike, and Segun Toriola.
Adesoji stressed that consistent competitions, quality coaching, and modern equipment were essential to success. He said the NTTF had hosted ITTF-certified courses and trained coaches, officials, and competition managers. He also highlighted efforts to expand programmes in northern Nigeria, using table tennis for youth empowerment and inclusion.
Adesoji hailed the championship as world-class and key to talent discovery and national team development. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s ambition to produce world champions, noting that youth dominance in Africa signals global promise.
