The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Friday inaugurated the Inter-Agency Committee on pilgrims’ education, enlightenment and orientation.
Mr Mike Omeri, the Director-General of NOA performed the inauguration along with the Chairman of NAHCON, Malam Muhammed Bello in continuation of the existing relationship between the two agencies in Abuja.
The NOA boss said that the move became necessary to ensure smooth Hajj operation and proper sensitisation of intending pilgrims.
Omeri said that the education and sensitisation of intending pilgrim was to ensure that Nigerians behaved responsibly while in the Holy land and project the image of the country in good light.
“What we do should be in the interest of Nigeria and the citizens must display the right attitude wherever they found themselves.’’
He called on Hajj commission to ensure that only right thinking Nigerian who would project the image of the country well were sent to the Holy land to pray for the country.
”Hajj exercise offers the citizenry the opportunity to come in contact with other people from different part of the world.
”Hence, it is the people who have the interest of the country that should be sent to such place,” Omeri said.
He said that the cooperation between the two agencies would be sustained, adding that it had developed appropriate framework for the relationship.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NOA had conducted a nationwide enlightenment of pilgrims and other stakeholders on the calendar of events of the 2013 Hajj programme.
It had also enlightened pilgrims on all Hajj reforms and other policies for the success of the 2013 Hajj programme to inculcate into pilgrims the “dos and don’ts’’ of Hajj performance among others.
Malam Muhammed Bello, the Chairman, NAHCON said that pilgrims’ education was fundamental to any intending pilgrims, adding that NOA was considered for the task because of its reach.
He said that pilgrims should be a reflection of the country, adding that anyone that left the shore of Nigeria for pilgrimage must be well behaved.
“Pilgrims need to be educated, oriented and enlightened on what is expected of them as a good representative of the country,’’ he said.
