The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has refused to open his defense in the terrorism case filed against him by the Federal Government. Naija247news gathered that the embattled separatist leader made the declaration during the resumed court proceedings on Monday, insisting that there is no lawful charge pending against him.
According to Naija247news, Kanu, who had earlier dismissed his legal team and opted to represent himself, told the court that after thoroughly reviewing his case file, he found no legitimate charge recognised under any Nigerian law. Addressing the court, he stated, “Join me in praising God. I have gone through my case file, and there is no charge against me.”
Naija247news understands that Kanu further argued that the terrorism allegations brought by the prosecution lacked any legal foundation. He maintained that the charge before the court does not exist under any extant law in Nigeria and therefore cannot be defended. He added, “There is no extant law in this country upon which the prosecution can predicate the charges against me. If there’s any, let my Lord read it out to me.”
Naija247news reports that Kanu consequently urged the presiding judge to either strike out the case entirely or grant him bail, asserting that his continued detention was unlawful. He said, “I should not enter any defence in a charge that does not exist under any law in Nigeria. I urge you to release me today or grant me bail.”
The courtroom, according to Naija247news, was tense as the self-acclaimed Biafra leader spoke passionately, reiterating his belief that the government had no valid case against him. His statement is the latest in a long-running legal battle that has seen multiple adjournments and widespread public interest both within and outside Nigeria.
Naija247news gathered that the trial judge adjourned the proceedings to allow the prosecution to respond to Kanu’s submission, with further hearing expected in the coming weeks.
