The Nigeria Police Force has warned its operatives against denting the image of the force by deviating from the standard operational procedure.
It vowed to continue to fish out erring operatives and sanction them in line with the provisions of the law.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated this while reacting to a trending video showing a policeman attached to the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) browsing through the mobile phones of travellers.
Reacting on his Twitter handle, Adejobi @Princemoye1 said the Commissioner of Police in charge of SWAT, CP Kolo Yusuf and Deputy Inspector General of Police Force Criminal Intelligence Department had been informed about the incident.
He, however, warned Nigerians against coming to beg on behalf of its men caught committing human rights breaches, noting that police will not hesitate to prosecute such individuals.
The Force PRO tweeted, “We have taken up this, yet another case. We have informed the CP SWAT, CP Kolo Yusuf and DIG FCID, we hope to fish them out asap.
“Since some of our men are bent on denting the image of the NPF, and deviate from our SOP, we won’t mind giving them their “doses” and sanctions in line with the provisions of the law.
“No sentiment in law at all, it’s a systemic thing and not personal. Unfortunately, many Nigerians and victims of their atrocities do mount pressures on us to drop charges against the identified bad eggs and sweep the cases under the carpet, which could be counterproductive.
“Once you know you don’t want to take up your case, no need to involve the FHQ and broadcast such, once it’s being brought to our notice, or in the news, we are obliged to act and take necessary legal step to sustain our values and ethics.
“So stop mounting pressure on FHQ or calling to wade in sentiments, it’s official not personally. I have warned that if any of the complainants who have blown up case, calls to beg or jeopardise our action, he or she will be exposed, so that Nigerians will know and experience what we face in injecting discipline into our system.”
