FG Approves $1bn Lagos Ports Modernisation, Eyes Nationwide Seaport Upgrades

Date:

Lagos, Nigeria – The Federal Government has approved a $1 billion modernisation project for the Lagos ports, as part of a broader strategy to upgrade Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure, enhance cargo handling efficiency, and position the country as a leading hub for global trade.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this during the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference, themed “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for a Sustainable Blue Economy in Nigeria.” The Minister was represented by Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

“We are working closely with all stakeholders to achieve a paperless, technology-driven port environment that enhances efficiency, reduces turnaround time, and curbs corruption,” Oyetola said.

He further highlighted that the Federal Government has already commenced the procurement process for modernisation projects at seaports outside Lagos, ensuring balanced infrastructural development across Nigeria’s maritime gateways.

“This landmark initiative is designed to upgrade infrastructure, improve cargo handling, and expand capacity to meet global standards,” he added.

Oyetola stressed that these reforms reflect the administration’s commitment to boosting logistics performance, trade competitiveness, and investment attractiveness within the marine and transport sectors.

The Minister also cited the Deep Blue Project as a key intervention, noting Nigeria’s success in maintaining zero piracy incidents over the past three years.

“Since the inception of the Ministry, we have focused on strategic reform and institutional strengthening. With the Deep Blue Project and other interventions, we are safeguarding our maritime domain to encourage investment and reduce the cost of doing business,” he explained.

The modernisation project is expected to bring advanced cargo handling technology, digitalisation of port operations, and expanded berthing capacity, positioning Lagos and other Nigerian ports to compete effectively on the global maritime stage.
