Monday Okpebholo, a serving senator, has officially taken office as the governor of Edo State following a highly anticipated inauguration ceremony held in Benin City on Tuesday. Naija247news gathered that Okpebholo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), was sworn in at approximately 1 p.m., marking a new chapter in Edo’s political landscape.

Naija247news understands that Okpebholo emerged victorious in the September 21 off-cycle governorship election, securing a decisive 291,667 votes against his main contender, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 247,274 votes. Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, trailed with 22,763 votes.

The inauguration event drew a host of prominent figures, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, chair of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and Philip Shaibu, the reinstated deputy governor of Edo. Governors affiliated with the APC and other dignitaries were also in attendance to witness Okpebholo’s oath of office. According to Naija247news, Dennis Idahosa, the newly elected deputy governor, was also sworn in during the ceremony.
