The Osun State Government has appointed Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund, a new initiative designed to mobilize private investment and reposition the state’s sports sector.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the state chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to the office of the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, in Osogbo.
Adewusi disclosed that the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke—who is Davido’s uncle—is fully committed to rebuilding Osun’s sports infrastructure and nurturing young athletic talent through strategic partnerships.
According to Adewusi, Davido accepted the appointment “without hesitation”, expressing his readiness to leverage his global influence and network to attract corporate sponsors, philanthropists, and international investors to support Osun’s sports development agenda.
“The introduction of the Sports Trust Fund will help attract support from sports philanthropists within and outside the state,” Adewusi said. “It is designed to ensure sustainable sports financing and development across Osun.”
He further revealed that the state government is in the final stages of establishing the Osun State Sports Commission, which will serve as the central body for sports administration, policy coordination, and athlete development.
Ongoing Stadium Upgrades
The Deputy Governor also confirmed that the renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium are well underway, noting that the upgraded facility will meet Olympic standards once completed.
“We are working to deliver a world-class sporting environment that will not only host local competitions but also attract national and international events,” Adewusi added.
Strategic Move and Symbolic Appointment
Analysts describe Davido’s appointment as both symbolic and strategic, reflecting the Adeleke administration’s vision to bridge entertainment, youth engagement, and sports development.
Davido, one of Africa’s most influential entertainers, has consistently supported youth-focused projects in Osun State. His involvement in the Sports Trust Fund is expected to energize private-sector participation, attract corporate partnerships, and raise the visibility of Osun’s sports industry.
The Trust Fund is part of the state’s long-term agenda to create a self-sustaining model for sports development, reduce dependence on government funding, and provide new opportunities for young athletes.
Adewusi expressed optimism that under Davido’s leadership, the initiative will mark a turning point in the state’s sporting history.
“This appointment signals a new dawn for Osun sports,” he said. “With Davido’s reach and influence, we believe the future of our athletes and facilities will shine brighter than ever before.”
