Port Harcourt, Dec. 4, 2020 The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Thursday assured that it will conduct smooth local government elections next year.
Retired Justice George Omereji, the Chairman of RSIEC, gave the assurance at a news briefing in Port Harcourt saying that the Commission would ensure hitch-free exercise.
Omereji stated that RSIEC had taken into cognisance the terrain and other environmental challenges while planning to curb them.
He disclosed that part of the plans was to ensure that those at the grassroots were not disenfranchised.
Furthermore, the Chairman stated that RSIEC would follow the rules of elections.
“We will not allow deviation from the rules; we will look at the rules and follow what the law says,” he said.
Omereji called on media and stakeholders to support the Commission to achieve a successful election.
He stated that collaboration with stakeholders remained the key to achieving a smooth and hitch-free election.
Omereji advised staff of the commission against compromise of any sort that could affect the polls.
Similarly, Mr Stanley Job, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), enjoined RSIEC to be transparent, and ensure safety of journalists during next year’s local government polls.
Job submitted that the desperation of some political actors might damage the integrity of the polls, once information and media coverage were interrupted.
