A Nigerian Muslim, Umar Mohammed Nasiru, has expressed concern that ongoing insecurity in the country makes it difficult to convince Christians and non-believers that Islam is a peaceful religion.

Nasiru made the remark in a Facebook post on Sunday while reacting to recent attacks by bandits in communities across Sokoto State.

He wrote,

“As a Muslim who was born and raised in Northern parts of Nigeria, it will be very difficult to convince a Christian or non-believer that Islam is not a violent religion considering the incessant killings ravaging the country from activities of ISWAP, Boko Haram, Fulani militia attacks, Lakurawa, kidnappings, banditry, farmers and herders clashes, and ethnic cleansing including Christian genocide.”

His post highlights the growing perception among some Nigerians that violent acts by certain armed groups are negatively affecting the image of Islam, despite the religion’s teachings of peace.

The comment comes amid rising insecurity in Northern Nigeria, where terrorist and bandit groups continue to target communities, causing fear, displacement, and significant loss of lives.
