Gusau, Zamfara – As part of its drive to boost food security and tackle youth unemployment from the grassroots, the Federal Government has launched Young Farmers Clubs in all primary schools across Zamfara State.
The initiative, which falls under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, aims to introduce schoolchildren to agriculture early in life and foster a culture of farming through hands-on participation.
Speaking at the official launch and distribution of farm tools in Gusau on Wednesday, Senator Tinubu—represented by the Wife of Zamfara State Governor, Hajjiya Huriyya Lawal—said the clubs would bridge the gap between theoretical and practical agriculture for pupils.
Each participating school has been equipped with a model school farm, solar-powered borehole, water pump, wheelbarrow, hoes, and cutlasses, among other tools.
“With this setup, our children will not only learn the theory but practice crop cultivation, helping them develop lifelong farming skills,” she said.
The First Lady added that if the programme is successfully implemented, it could significantly reduce food insecurity and youth unemployment in the country.
“We are rebuilding hope and preparing a future generation of agriculturally empowered Nigerians. Early exposure to agriculture will transform today’s children into tomorrow’s agri-entrepreneurs,” she emphasized.
Also speaking, Prof. Nasiru Anka, Chairman of the Zamfara Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), commended the federal government for selecting Zamfara as a pilot location, pledging continuous support to sustain the programme.
He also lauded the active involvement of Hajjiya Huriyya Lawal in executing the policy, calling it a timely intervention that aligns with the state’s food security agenda.
