LAGOS, Dec. 28, 2025 (Naija247news) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage remains a key driver of tourism and a strategic asset for global destination marketing. Speaking at the Grand Finale of the 2025 Eyo Festival in Lagos, the President said the country must harness its cultural traditions to boost tourism revenue and national identity.

Tinubu, dressed in traditional white agbada, damask sash and the distinctive star-embellished hat, joined thousands of revellers at Tafawa Balewa Square, carrying the ceremonial opambata staff — a symbolic honour reserved for participants in the historic Lagos carnival.

In a statement released by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described the festival as a celebration of history, unity and cultural continuity.

“Our culture holds great tourism potential. Our cultural assets can serve as valuable resources for destination promotion. The glamour of white-robed figures parading our streets sends a resounding message about our identity and country,” the President said.

He noted that the event coincided with Detty December, a peak festive season that draws thousands of Nigerians in the diaspora and international tourists into Lagos, further highlighting its tourism value.

The 2025 Eyo Festival returned after an eight-year break and honoured four distinguished Lagos figures — Mobolaji Johnson, first military governor of Lagos State; Alhaji Lateef Jakande, first civilian governor; Sir Michael Otedola, former governor; and Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, former Iyaloja-General and mother of President Tinubu.

Tinubu described the festival as “a great rekindling of our culture,” adding that it celebrates exemplary leadership and contributions to Lagos and Nigeria.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who welcomed dignitaries alongside the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, said the moment was historic for the state and a cultural homecoming for the President.

“As our son and father, we are here with the President witnessing a defining moment in Lagos history,” Sanwo-Olu said, pledging continued support for cultural preservation alongside economic growth.

The festival featured a procession of Eyo masquerade groups, traditional chants, drum performances and indigenous music, drawing dignitaries such as Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, diplomats and senior government officials.

The celebration concluded with prayers for the President and the nation.
