Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the release of N1.4 billion for the immediate dualization of a 1.9-kilometer road from Ngomari Junction to Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri. The approval was made during the maiden state executive council meeting held at the Government House in Maiduguri.
Addressing journalists after the council meeting, Commissioner for Works, Mustapha Gubio, explained that the dualization project aims to ease the movement of people to and from the airport, which will soon begin international flight operations. He added that, beyond this project, more roads and drainage systems will be constructed across the three senatorial districts of Borno State during this fiscal year.
“Apart from the N1.4 billion approval for the dualization of the Ngomari Junction to Muhammadu Buhari International Airport up to the Hajj Operational Unit, more roads and drainage systems will be executed across communities in the state,” Gubio said. He also noted that several roads and drainage projects have already been completed, including asphalt paving of roads damaged by recent flooding.
Health Sector Prioritized with 15% of State Budget
Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Professor Baba Malam Gana, highlighted that Governor Zulum has allocated 15% of the total state budget to the health sector. The funds will be used to train more medical personnel, including doctors, nurses, and midwives, while hospitals and clinics across the state will be rebuilt and equipped for modern diagnostic and treatment services.
“The state lost 45% of its health institutions due to insurgency, necessitating the reconstruction and expansion of health facilities,” Gana said. He added that the nursing colleges in Monguno and Gwoza will be completed this year to train frontline healthcare workers.
Education Sector Targets Reduction in Out-of-School Children
The Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Lawan Abba Wakilbe, assured that the government is committed to reducing the number of out-of-school children in the state. Currently at 700,000, the state aims to bring this number down to 200,000 by 2027 through various education reforms and initiatives.
Governor Zulum’s administration remains committed to improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education to rebuild Borno and address the needs of its citizens.
