Naija247news reports that the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, has defended the Presidency’s N10 billion solar power project, stating that the initiative is a strategic component of President Bola Tinubu’s broader energy reform agenda.

According to Naija247news, Dr. Abdullahi addressed mounting public scrutiny over the solar power investment during a media briefing in Abuja, emphasizing that the project is designed to boost access to reliable and clean electricity, particularly in underserved rural communities.

Naija247news understands that the N10 billion solar initiative forms part of the federal government’s commitment to transitioning Nigeria towards renewable energy sources while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The ECN DG noted that this project would provide off-grid solar solutions to thousands of homes, schools, and health centers across the country.

Naija247news gathered that Dr. Abdullahi explained the project’s alignment with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places a strong emphasis on sustainability, job creation, and technological innovation in Nigeria’s power sector. He also highlighted the potential of the solar initiative to stimulate economic activity at the grassroots level by enabling micro-enterprises and supporting agricultural processing in rural areas.

Naija247news reports that the project, which will be implemented in phases over the next 18 months, is expected to create over 15,000 direct and indirect jobs through local assembly, installation, and maintenance of solar units. The ECN is partnering with private sector players and technical experts to ensure the delivery of high-quality systems that meet international standards.

According to Naija247news, critics had earlier questioned the transparency and viability of the N10 billion budget, urging the government to disclose detailed implementation plans. In response, the ECN assured stakeholders that the project will be subjected to strict procurement guidelines and independent monitoring to guarantee accountability.

Naija247news understands that the solar power initiative is also in line with Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, targeting emissions reduction through clean energy adoption.

Naija247news gathered that the ECN will soon roll out a public engagement campaign to sensitize communities and stakeholders on the benefits of the project and how to participate.
