A civil society organization, The Egalitarian Africa, has thrown its weight behind the Minister of State for Defense, Dr. Bello Matawalle, declaring that he remains competent and strategically positioned to deliver on national security responsibilities. Naija247news gathered that the group made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, insisting that President Bola Tinubu must disregard mounting calls for the minister’s resignation.
The group’s position comes in the wake of the recent resignation of the former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badru, which has sparked conversations in some quarters, with critics suggesting that Matawalle should also step down. Naija247news understands that the development has generated significant debate within political circles, particularly as issues surrounding insecurity remain a top national concern.
According to the organisation’s General Secretary, Sunday Akogun, who signed the statement, the calls for Matawalle’s resignation are driven by self-serving interests rather than national security considerations. Naija247news reports that the group argued that Badru’s resignation does not in any way necessitate Matawalle’s exit from office, especially at a time when the country requires cohesive leadership in the fight against insecurity.
The statement emphasised that Matawalle’s experience as a former Governor of Zamfara State provides him with a unique advantage in addressing insecurity, having grappled directly with issues of banditry and terrorism during his tenure. According to Naija247news, the group stressed that such firsthand experience is invaluable as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to curtail rising security threats.
The Egalitarian Africa noted that in matters as sensitive as national defence, the government must remain steadfast in its decisions and avoid being swayed by orchestrated campaigns targeting public officials. Naija247news gathered that the group maintained that controversies often trail political appointments in Nigeria, but the government must uphold its conviction in individuals it considers capable.
It further alleged that certain interests may have gone to extreme lengths, including sponsoring targeted content, in an attempt to discredit the minister. According to Naija247news, the organisation warned that such actions are detrimental to national unity and security, especially at a time when collective efforts are needed to combat criminal activities across the country.
The group also appealed to Nigerians to close ranks and support the Federal Government in its ongoing battle against insecurity, stressing that the situation calls for solidarity rather than divisive campaigns. Naija247news understands that the group highlighted the importance of prioritising national stability over personal or political gains.
The Egalitarian Africa insisted that security challenges in the country should not be trivialised or politicised, adding that citizens must focus on supporting initiatives aimed at restoring peace. Naija247news reports that the group described the current moment as a wake-up call for all well-meaning Nigerians to contribute positively to the efforts of security agencies and policymakers.
In its concluding remarks, the organisation urged Dr. Matawalle to remain focused on his duties and avoid distractions capable of undermining his performance. Naija247news gathered that the group encouraged him to continue contributing to the fight against insecurity with renewed commitment and steadfastness.
The statement reiterated that the task of securing Nigeria requires experience, resilience and national support, qualities it believes the minister possesses.
