Addis Ababa, Jan. 4, 2026 (Naija247news) — The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned the United States’ military strikes on Venezuela and the reported capture of President Nicolás Maduro by US personnel, warning that the actions raise serious concerns about respect for international law and national sovereignty.

In a communiqué released on Sunday, the continental body said it was following developments in the South American country with grave concern, particularly amid reports of military attacks on Venezuelan state institutions and the alleged abduction of a sitting head of state.

“The reported abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and the military actions against state institutions raise serious concerns regarding respect for international law and the sovereignty of nations,” the AU said.

Commitment to International Law

The African Union reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

The AU stressed that these principles must guide relations among nations, warning that unilateral military actions and regime-change operations undermine the global rules-based order and threaten international peace and stability.

Call for Dialogue, Not Force

Emphasising peaceful conflict resolution, the AU called for dialogue, restraint, and constitutional processes, urging all parties involved to prioritise diplomacy over military force.

“The African Union emphasises that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves,” the statement said.

The continental body also underscored the importance of peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and good neighbourliness in international relations.

Solidarity With Venezuelan People

The AU expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela, reiterating its commitment to the promotion of peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.

It further called on all parties involved in the crisis to exercise restraint, responsibility, and respect for international law in order to prevent further escalation and preserve regional peace and stability in Latin America.

The AU’s intervention adds to growing international criticism of the US operation, with several governments, global organisations, and legal experts questioning the legality of the strikes and the detention of a sitting foreign president under international law.

As tensions continue to rise, the African Union warned that failure to uphold international norms could set a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences beyond the Venezuelan crisis.
