Abuja – Nigeria’s most ambitious road project, the 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, has come under intense scrutiny after reports revealed the N15 trillion budget translates to over N21 billion per kilometre.
The revelation comes as Minister of Works, David Umahi, faces criticism for not addressing the staggering cost figure publicly. The first 47.47-kilometre phase alone carries a price tag of N1.067 trillion, averaging N22.5 billion per kilometre.
Critics, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have warned that the project risks being a “wasteful mega-contract,” pointing to concerns over transparency and the role of Hitech Construction Company Ltd., linked to associates of President Bola Tinubu.
Government officials insist the highway is vital for regional integration and economic growth, but Nigerians continue to question whether the N15 trillion investment is justifiable.
The story is developing as stakeholders, civil society groups, and lawmakers weigh in on the potential financial and logistical implications of this historic project.
