Doctors Threaten Strike Over Salary Cuts: NMA Katsina Warns FG of Impending Health Sector Crisis

Date:

KATSINA | July 20, 2025 — The Katsina State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government over a controversial salary adjustment policy, threatening to embark on a statewide strike if urgent demands are not met.

This development follows a communique released after an emergency State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held Saturday in Katsina, signed by the chapter’s Chairman, Dr. Muhammadu Sani-Abubakar, and Secretary, Dr. Yahaya Salisu-Sodangi.

Doctors Reject FG Circular on New Salary Structure

The association expressed deep dissatisfaction over a recent circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), dated June 27, 2025, which reportedly adjusted allowances for medical and dental officers in the federal public service.

“The circular is grossly inadequate, misleading, and a flagrant violation of agreements previously reached between the NMA and the Federal Government,” the communique stated.

The NMA rejected the circular (SWC/S/04/S.218/III/646) outright and demanded its immediate withdrawal, urging the government to fulfill all prior commitments made to medical practitioners.

Healthcare Sector at Breaking Point, NMA Warns

The Katsina NMA highlighted the worsening conditions of service and the dire consequences of continued neglect of doctors’ welfare:

“Rather than improve the welfare and morale of the few remaining dedicated medical practitioners, the government continues to make unfulfilled promises while doctors face burnout and economic hardship,” it added.

The association also raised alarm over the growing exodus of health professionals due to poor remuneration and working conditions, warning that the system is on the verge of collapse.

Ultimatum Issued: 21-Day Grace Period Expires

The NMA reaffirmed its support for the stance of the National Officers Committee (NOC), which earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government beginning July 2, 2025.

“We cannot guarantee the uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services to the Nigerian people after the expiration of the grace period,” the communique warned.

Final Note

With this move, Katsina joins a growing number of state chapters demanding fair treatment of healthcare workers across Nigeria. Unless urgent steps are taken, the country risks another widespread medical strike—one that could cripple healthcare delivery amid ongoing economic challenges.
