Abuja, April 1, 2025 (NAN) – Dr. Adesida Adewumi, a Consultant Family Physician, has revealed that couples who engage in regular sexual activity tend to live longer and enjoy better health than those with less frequent sexual activity.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday, Adewumi highlighted the numerous health benefits of frequent sex, including improved lifespan, a stronger immune system, better sleep, lower blood pressure, and reduced mental and physical stress.
Health Benefits of Regular Sex
According to Adewumi, regular sexual activity can significantly lower the risk of life-threatening conditions such as stroke and heart attacks. It also alleviates body pain, reduces headaches, and plays a role in cancer prevention.
“Regular sex reduces the risk of prostate and breast cancers. For men, ejaculating at least 21 times a month significantly lowers the risk of prostate cancer,” he stated.
He further noted that sex burns calories, making it a good alternative form of exercise for individuals who are overweight or obese.
“Sexual activity acts like a cardiovascular workout when performed at least three times a week on alternate days. Additionally, it helps lower high blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for individuals at risk of diabetes,” Adewumi explained.
Beyond physical health, he stressed that regular sex has psychological benefits, such as reducing the risk of depression and anxiety. It also enhances brain function, leading to improved productivity and career fulfillment.
Sex During Pregnancy and Menstrual Cycles
Discussing its role in pregnancy, Adewumi pointed out that pregnant women who engage in regular sex tend to experience smoother deliveries and quicker post-delivery recovery.
“Women who maintain an active sex life during pregnancy are more likely to have an easier labor compared to those who abstain,” he added.
For women, he recommended engaging in sexual activity a few days before their menstrual cycle begins, as it can help alleviate menstrual cramps.
Strengthening Emotional Bonds
Adewumi emphasized that sex also plays a crucial role in fostering emotional well-being and intimacy between partners.
“Couples who have regular sex tend to be happier, more logical, and less irritable. It reduces loneliness, makes arguments less frequent, and even improves memory and cognitive function,” he said.
He also noted that a healthy sexual relationship strengthens social bonds, making individuals more confident and successful in other areas of life, including their careers.
The Importance of Safe Sexual Practices
While highlighting the benefits of regular sex, Adewumi stressed the importance of engaging in sexual activity within a committed and monogamous relationship.
“Maintaining a healthy sexual relationship with one partner significantly reduces the risk of exposure to sexually transmitted diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), herpes, and hepatitis,” he advised.
