This expansion follows the success of the initial rollout in Canada, parts of Europe, and Asia. The contactless system allows Nigerian citizens living abroad to renew their passports without having to visit passport centres for biometric capturing, marking a significant step in easing the passport renewal process.

To apply, Nigerians can download the NIS mobile application from the Google Play Store, with an iOS version expected to be available soon on the App Store. Akinlabi further revealed that an enhanced version of the app is currently being developed to improve user experience.

Looking ahead, the third phase of the contactless passport service will cover Nigeria and Australia, with dates for the rollout to be announced in the coming weeks. This initiative is part of the NIS’s ongoing efforts to streamline passport processing and provide better services to Nigerians globally.
