In a bold move to drive social investment across Nigeria’s underserved communities, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and its upstream partner, FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company (FIRST E&P), have disbursed over ₦287 million to 12 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) under the flagship “Impact FIRST” grant initiative.

The funding, strategically aimed at delivering socio-economic uplift through education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment, was unveiled at a high-level ceremony attended by key stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy and development space.

Speaking at the event, Loveday Minanengiyeofori, Lead Community Relations at NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), who represented the Chief Upstream Investment Officer, Engr. Seyi Omotowa, hailed the commitment of the NGOs. “NNPC Ltd is fostering strategic social partnerships that spark economic transformation and community resilience,” he stated.

On his part, Emmanuel Etomi, Executive Director of Corporate Services at FIRST E&P, emphasized that real change happens through collaboration. “We are investing in human capital by empowering NGOs tackling Nigeria’s toughest social problems.”

The 2025 beneficiaries include prominent groups such as The Asido Foundation, SCFN, FATE Foundation, and The IREDE Foundation. Projects range from prosthetic support, cataract surgeries, and school infrastructure upgrades, to mental health interventions and sustainability-focused recycling programs.

The JV, which first launched the ‘Impact FIRST’ initiative in 2024 with five recipients, has more than doubled its outreach in this second edition—signaling a robust integration of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) strategies into upstream oil and gas operations.

This strategic CSR injection comes at a time when Nigeria’s energy sector is under pressure to deliver value beyond hydrocarbons. Stakeholders say the move positions NNPC/FIRST E&P JV as a model for socially responsible investment in the oil and gas industry.
