Abuja – Naija247news – April 12, 2025 – The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that the $2.8 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project has reached 72% completion as of the end of the first quarter of 2025.

This significant milestone was disclosed by the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, during the 2025 edition of the Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (OLEF) hosted by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria. Themed “Driving Energy Sustainability Through Technology, Policy, and Supply Chain Excellence,” this year’s forum spotlighted the future of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector amid growing global and regional energy demands.

Represented by the Executive Vice President of Upstream, Engr. Udobong Ntia, Ojulari noted that the AKK project is a critical component of Nigeria’s strategy to industrialize the North, deepen gas utilization, and reduce reliance on imported fuels.

He underscored the stark energy reality across the African continent, stating, “Over 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity. This is not just a challenge—it’s an opportunity for transformation.” Ojulari called on stakeholders to view Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves as a springboard for delivering energy security, driving industrial development, and achieving long-term sustainability.

The NNPC boss reiterated the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan, which targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. He explained that NNPC is actively expanding its Autogas initiative, targeting the conversion of over one million vehicles by 2026, in a bid to reduce carbon footprints and ease pressure on petrol imports.

Ojulari also hailed the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) of 2021 as a landmark reform that has repositioned NNPC into a commercially driven, profit-oriented entity—geared towards delivering value to Nigerians and investors alike.

“The AKK pipeline is more than a project—it’s a national legacy that will open up gas-based industries in the North, boost job creation, and reinforce Nigeria’s energy independence,” he said.

With the AKK pipeline nearing three-quarters completion, attention is now turning to how quickly it can be fully operational to support power generation and manufacturing across Nigeria’s central and northern corridors.
