Naija247news gathered that the training initiative is spearheaded by the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The programme is designed to bolster Nigeria’s capacity in cancer detection, diagnosis, treatment, and data collection through cutting-edge research methodologies.

According to Naija247news, the training is taking place at the Nigeria Medical Research Institute (NIMR) in Lagos, where experts from various health institutions, universities, and medical research bodies have converged. The initiative is considered a critical move towards reducing the national burden of cancer, which remains a significant contributor to mortality and morbidity in the country.

Naija247news understands that the Executive Director of NICRAT, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, emphasized the urgency of the programme in addressing the increasing cancer prevalence in Nigeria. He noted that building local research capacity is essential in discovering indigenous solutions, improving early detection, and ensuring evidence-based interventions.

Speaking during the launch, Prof. Aliyu stated, “This programme is a deliberate effort to build a pool of experts that will contribute to national cancer control efforts through quality research and data-driven approaches.”

Naija247news reports that the participants were selected from key institutions nationwide, with a focus on promoting inclusivity and multidisciplinary collaboration. The training will cover various modules including molecular biology, clinical trials, epidemiology, cancer genomics, and data analysis.

The Federal Government, through the Health Ministry, has reiterated its long-term vision to integrate cancer research into primary healthcare and public health planning. Stakeholders have lauded the move as timely and strategic in light of global calls for countries to strengthen local health research systems.

Naija247news gathered that the training aligns with the government’s strategic cancer control plan, which includes awareness, early screening, improved treatment options, and enhanced palliative care.
