UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Downing Street, where he assured Ukraine of the UK’s unwavering support “for as long as it may take.” The meeting came as Ukraine continues to seek international backing in its ongoing war against Russia.
Following their discussions, Zelenskyy announced a new loan agreement between Ukraine and the UK worth £2.26 billion (€2.74 billion or $2.84 billion). The Ukrainian president emphasized that the funds will be used to strengthen his country’s defense capabilities. In a social media post on X, he described the loan as a step toward justice, stating that the debt would be repaid using revenues from frozen Russian assets. “The one who started the war must be the one to pay,” Zelenskyy wrote.
The Ukrainian leader is set to meet with King Charles on Sunday before holding talks with European leaders. His visit comes after a tense meeting with former US President Donald Trump, during which he stressed the importance of Ukraine being heard on the global stage. European leaders have reiterated their commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy continues to seek military and financial aid to sustain Ukraine’s resistance against Russia. The UK’s latest financial commitment underscores its position as one of Kyiv’s key allies.
