Naija247news reports that the Chairman of the Agricultural Sector Skills Council of Nigeria (ASSC), has emphasized the crucial role renewable energy can play in transforming the country’s agricultural sector by enabling year-round farming and significantly reducing post-harvest losses.
Naija247news gathered that the ASSC boss made the remarks during a stakeholders’ forum focused on sustainable agricultural practices. He stressed that Nigeria’s dependence on seasonal rainfall for farming limits productivity, and adopting renewable energy solutions such as solar-powered irrigation systems could enhance food security by allowing farmers to cultivate crops throughout the year.
According to Naija247news, a major challenge facing Nigerian farmers is post-harvest loss, which is often caused by inadequate storage facilities, poor electricity supply, and inefficient transportation systems. The ASSC chairman noted that renewable energy could help bridge this gap by powering cold storage systems, drying facilities, and processing plants, ensuring that perishable goods last longer and retain their market value.
Naija247news understands that the integration of solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources into agricultural production could also reduce the cost of production by lowering farmers’ reliance on expensive diesel-powered equipment. This, in turn, would increase profit margins and promote more sustainable farming practices.
Naija247news reports that experts at the event called for increased government investment and private sector collaboration to expand access to renewable energy solutions in rural farming communities. They also urged policymakers to introduce incentives, such as subsidies and low-interest loans, to encourage farmers to adopt these technologies.
