Fr. Ubaechu was kidnapped on Sunday in Ejemekwuru while traveling to the annual retreat of priests of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese. The Chancellor and Secretary of the Archdiocese, Rev. Fr. Patrick Mbarah, confirmed the abduction in a statement on Monday.

A church source disclosed that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million before reducing their demand. However, conflicting reports suggest varying ransom amounts, raising concerns over the authenticity of the demands.

“Most parishioners are extremely worried about his safety. We keep praying for his release,” the source said, urging the state government and security agencies to intervene.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the kidnappers forced Fr. Ubaechu to remove his cassock before dragging him out of his vehicle. His abandoned car was later recovered by Naval personnel at Izombe.

The Catholic community has pleaded with the abductors to have a change of heart and release the priest, emphasizing that he is a missionary with no financial means to meet such a demand.
