Atiku, who has been a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration, accused the government of stifling opposition voices, weaponizing state institutions, and failing to uphold the principles of free and fair elections. He lamented that Nigeria’s democracy, once a beacon of hope in Africa, is now under serious threat due to growing impunity and disregard for democratic norms.
“A democracy that does not guarantee free and fair elections, that does not respect the rule of law, and that does not prioritize the welfare of its citizens is in crisis,” he stated.
Concerns Over Electoral Integrity and Governance
The former presidential candidate also pointed to the controversial 2023 elections, which he and other opposition figures claim were marred by manipulation, voter suppression, and a lack of transparency. According to him, democracy cannot thrive where institutions are weakened, and leaders refuse to be held accountable.
“The true test of democracy is not just in holding elections but in ensuring that those elections reflect the will of the people,” Atiku stressed.
Economic Hardship Fueling Discontent
Atiku linked the erosion of democracy to Nigeria’s worsening economic crisis, stating that when people struggle to afford basic necessities, their democratic rights become secondary. He urged the government to focus on policies that alleviate poverty, create jobs, and restore public confidence in democratic governance.
Call to Action: “Nigerians Must Defend Democracy”
Atiku called on citizens, civil society organizations, and the international community to remain vigilant and resist any attempts to erode Nigeria’s hard-earned democratic gains.
“We must all rise to defend democracy. If we allow impunity to reign unchecked, we risk sliding into dictatorship,” he warned.
As Nigeria navigates its political and economic challenges, Atiku’s comments serve as a reminder that democracy requires constant vigilance, accountability, and the active participation of the people.
