Enugu, March 23, 2025 (Naija247news) – Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State has set an ambitious goal of surpassing the ₦600 billion Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) target for 2025, a crucial funding source for the state’s developmental projects. Mbah made this announcement during his investiture as President of the Enugu Sports Club, also unveiling a newly remodeled clubhouse and the installation of new club patrons.

Reflecting on his administration’s economic growth targets, Mbah stated that Enugu’s economy, projected to grow from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, will rely on a 27% compounded annual growth rate. Despite initial doubts, he emphasized that shifting focus from federal allocations to mobilizing domestic revenue has made this goal attainable.

The governor highlighted the growth in IGR, which has surged from ₦25 billion at the start of his tenure to the ₦600 billion target for 2025. He expressed confidence that Enugu would not only meet but surpass this target, allowing significant investments in key sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

Ahead of the 2026 National Sports Festival, Mbah committed to the renovation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Awgu Sports Village, including a new stadium featuring aquatic sports facilities. This move is part of a broader strategy to achieve inclusive growth across Enugu State.

In addition to sporting infrastructure, Mbah praised the Enugu Sports Club for fostering social cohesion and pledged further support, including road asphalting and addressing other club needs. Chief Nnanna Atuonwu, Chairman of the club, thanked Mbah for his support in the clubhouse renovation and advocated for the creation of a Trust Fund for the club’s sustainability.

The event saw the installation of new patrons, including Ms. Edna Erinne, Chief Kingsley Eze, Dr. David Ogbodo, and Chief Festus Onu, while Mr. Ifeanyi Nweke was named as the next chairman of the club.

Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, the chairman of the occasion, commended Atuonwu for his leadership in transforming the clubhouse and acknowledged Mbah’s contributions. Meanwhile, Chief Nnia Nwobodo, a trustee, suggested the establishment of a cinema or film hall within the club to enhance education and community engagement.
