The reintroduction of sanitary inspectors is part of the broader Abia Clean-Up Initiative, aimed at fostering a cleaner and healthier environment for the state’s residents. Kanu emphasized that the role of the sanitary inspectors would be vital in enforcing hygiene standards and preventing the spread of diseases linked to poor sanitation.

Kanu stated, “The decision to bring back sanitary inspectors stems from the understanding that a clean environment plays a crucial role in the overall health and well-being of the people.” The initiative will be managed by the Ministry of Environment and the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA).

The commissioner highlighted the notable progress the state has made in recent months, particularly in Aba, a city once notorious for its waste management challenges. He pointed out that streets which were once filled with refuse had now been cleaned up, showcasing the administration’s commitment to improving environmental sanitation.

To ensure that these gains are sustained, Kanu explained that the sanitary inspectors would be responsible for monitoring compliance with environmental health regulations and enforcing sanitary laws. This proactive approach is intended to prevent the recurrence of waste-related health issues in the state.
