With the 2027 presidential election approaching, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is fast becoming a key player in Nigeria’s political landscape. Agunloye, the party’s National Secretary, revealed that the SDP currently has seven presidential aspirants vying for its ticket. This number is expected to grow, with some political figures even hinting at joining the party.
Of particular note is the movement of loyalists from the Labour Party (LP), particularly those aligned with 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi. Agunloye confirmed that Obi’s supporters have approached the SDP, expressing interest in aligning with the party. While the former Anambra Governor has not made an official move, Agunloye emphasized that the SDP is open to welcoming any aspirant, provided they are willing to follow the party’s structure and rules.
The SDP’s growing appeal is seen as a response to the intra-party struggles within the PDP and LP, which have been weakened by leadership crises and mounting dissatisfaction. The shift is indicative of a larger trend as key figures, including former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, are now considering the SDP as their vehicle for the 2027 election.
Agunloye assured that while the SDP welcomes these new additions, the party will retain its core values and will not allow external forces to overshadow its established structure. He stressed that any merging or inclusion must benefit the party as a whole, noting the importance of balancing new entrants with existing members to ensure the party’s integrity.
The race for the SDP ticket is becoming a delicate balancing act, as names like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai emerge as potential contenders. With the presidential slot up for grabs, Agunloye’s remarks highlight the growing competition and the party’s strategic approach to securing a solid position in the next presidential election.
As the battle for 2027 intensifies, the SDP seems poised to play a critical role, but the key question remains: which faction will claim the coveted presidential ticket?
