Several Ijaw groups have strongly demanded the immediate reinstatement of Siminalayi Fubara as Governor of Rivers State, accusing the former Governor, Nyesom Wike, of disrespecting the Ijaw people’s heritage and ancestors with his recent actions. The demand follows Fubara’s suspension, which the groups allege is politically motivated and seeks to undermine the progress made by the Ijaw people in the state.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The groups, which include the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) and various traditional councils, expressed concern that Wike’s decision not only disregarded the democratic process but also dishonored the Ijaw people’s rich history and contributions to the development of Rivers State. According to the Ijaw leaders, Wike’s actions could have negative consequences on the unity and political cohesion of the Ijaw communities in the region.
Political Motivations Behind Suspension
The Ijaw groups argued that Wike’s suspension of Fubara was designed to undermine the Ijaw people’s hold on political power in the state. They claim that Fubara, as an Ijaw son, represents the collective aspirations of the Ijaw people and that Wike’s actions are part of a larger scheme to marginalize their influence in state politics. They also expressed fears that Wike’s political maneuvering might be an attempt to clear the path for his allies in the state government, who do not share the same commitment to the Ijaw people’s welfare.
Accusations of Disrespecting Ijaw Ancestors
The groups have gone further, accusing Wike of disrespecting the Ijaw ancestors who fought for the empowerment and recognition of their people within the larger Nigerian political framework. The Ijaw people have a long history of resistance and struggle for fair treatment and political autonomy, and the groups argue that Wike’s suspension of Fubara is a betrayal of the sacrifices made by their ancestors. They have called on Wike to apologize and rectify his actions, urging him to consider the social and political consequences of his decisions on the Ijaw community.
A Call for Unity and Fairness
In their public statements, the Ijaw groups also appealed for unity among all ethnic groups in Rivers State, urging that political decisions be made in the spirit of fairness, justice, and inclusiveness. They called for a stop to any actions that may divide the state along ethnic lines and called on the federal government to intervene in the matter to ensure peace and stability in the state.
As tensions continue to rise, the Ijaw groups have vowed to mobilize their members and make their grievances known at both the state and national levels if Fubara is not reinstated and the issues surrounding his suspension are not addressed.
