A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a public apology after referring to Lagos State as a “smelling state” in a viral video. Following widespread backlash, the corps member retracted her statement, acknowledging that her words were inappropriate. “I sincerely apologize for my comment about Lagos. It was wrong and insensitive, and I regret any offense it caused,” she said.

Many Lagos residents and social media users criticized her remarks, emphasizing the state’s economic significance and cultural diversity. Others, however, suggested that her comment reflected genuine concerns about sanitation and infrastructure, which should be addressed constructively.

The NYSC has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but past cases suggest that corps members are expected to uphold discipline and respect their host communities.

The controversy has reignited discussions about the experiences of corps members deployed to various states across Nigeria, with many sharing their challenges and observations about living conditions.
