The Trump administration is contemplating a new travel ban that could impact citizens from 43 countries, varying the degree of restrictions based on the security concerns of each nation. According to a report from the New York Times, the countries are divided into three categories with different levels of restrictions.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Red Category (Total Ban): Citizens from countries on the red list would be completely barred from entering the United States. These nations include Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
Orange Category (Visa Restrictions): In this category, countries like Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan would face sharp restrictions. Business travelers from these nations might still be allowed entry, but those seeking immigrant or tourist visas would face obstacles. Additionally, applicants from these countries would be required to undergo in-person interviews to receive a visa.
Yellow Category (Potential for Stricter Restrictions): Citizens from 22 countries, including Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Cambodia, would have 60 days to address U.S. concerns about security measures or face being moved to a stricter category.
This draft list is said to have been developed several weeks ago by the U.S. State Department, and while it is not final, changes are anticipated as it moves through the White House review process.
This proposal mirrors the controversial “Muslim ban” that Trump imposed during his first term, which initially targeted countries like Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. Despite domestic and international backlash, the Supreme Court upheld a modified version of the ban, later adding North Korea and Venezuela to the list.
