A policy think tank, the National Transformational Initiative for Reconciliation and Forgiveness Advocacy, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing face-off between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The organization emphasized the need for the President to invite both parties for dialogue to ensure a peaceful resolution and avoid further damage to the country’s image.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The think tank expressed concern that the misunderstanding between the two, once perceived as family friends, has escalated unnecessarily, with certain elements fueling the tension for their gain. The organization warned that the situation is attracting global attention and could further strain Nigeria’s reputation if not promptly addressed.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the organization, Yusuf Ibrahim, acknowledged that while the Senate has the constitutional power to regulate its own affairs, the President’s intervention is necessary to protect the nation’s image. Ibrahim highlighted how a simple reshuffling of sitting arrangements has spiraled into a national controversy, resulting in allegations and political scheming that threaten the integrity of the Senate.
Ibrahim stressed that the Senate, as the highest legislative body in the country, deserves protection from political misadventures and actions that undermine the nation’s wellbeing. He urged President Tinubu to take swift action to resolve the matter and prevent further damage to Nigeria’s hard-earned reputation.
He continued, “The Nigerian Senate occupies an enviable position as the highest legislative body in the country, and every Senator is addressed as distinguished, commanding respect. In this guise, the institution must be protected from political misadventures and surreptitious scheming, especially from those who do not have the nation’s best interests at heart.”
The Executive Secretary also emphasized that Nigerians are a respectful and dignified people, and the country’s image must be safeguarded. He warned that the ongoing discord, which some are exploiting to create further division, could have long-lasting negative effects, particularly among Nigerians in the diaspora.
He appealed to President Tinubu to take a proactive approach and initiate dialogue to resolve the tensions. Ibrahim noted that despite the differences, both Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan are mature individuals with significant influence, and they would likely be open to resolving the matter for the greater good.
In conclusion, the think tank reiterated its belief that under President Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria can achieve progress and development, and that handling such disputes with wisdom and speed would be crucial to maintaining the nation’s unity and global standing.
