Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, secured a spot in the final qualification round for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating South Africa 2-0 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Saturday.

The match remained goalless in the early stages, but Harmony Chidi, who scored twice in the first leg, broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a precise header. Shakirat Moshood, who had also found the net in the first leg, provided the assist from a free kick.
Moshood turned provider again 11 minutes into the second half, setting up Aishat Animashaun, who expertly lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Samekelise Mthembu to double Nigeria’s lead.
Due to their impressive third-place finish in the last edition of the tournament, Nigeria was given a bye into the second qualification round. The Flamingos will now face the winner between Botswana and Algeria in the final round of the qualifiers.
Four teams will emerge from the qualification series to join host nation Morocco as Africa’s representatives at the tournament, scheduled to take place from October 17 to November 5, 2025.
