Political analysts believe the discussions could be linked to possible realignments among opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
2023 Election Results and Opposition Strategies
Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election, securing 6,101,533 votes and winning in 11 states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). The election was won by former Lagos State governor and APC candidate, Bola Tinubu, who garnered 8,794,726 votes and claimed victory in 12 states. PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, placed second with 6,984,520 votes, also winning 12 states.
Former Kano State Governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, finished fourth, securing 1,496,687 votes and winning in Kano State.
Since the 2023 elections, opposition parties have been exploring the idea of a coalition to strengthen their chances of defeating the APC in 2027. Atiku has been seen meeting with Obi, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other influential political figures.
El-Rufai Dumps APC for SDP
Earlier this week, El-Rufai formally announced his departure from the APC, citing the party’s deviation from the political ideals of its founding members. He has since joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), further fueling speculations about a possible opposition coalition.
With political tensions rising ahead of 2027, Obi’s meeting with Bala Mohammed is seen as another strategic move in the unfolding drama of Nigeria’s political realignment. More details on the discussions are expected to be revealed after their official statements.
