President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday met with members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, including Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, in a crucial closed-door meeting at the State House.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! The meeting came after a prolonged leadership crisis that had affected the House, with lawmakers arriving in two white buses, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Meranda. Speaker Obasa, who arrived separately minutes later, joined the discussions behind closed doors.
After the meeting, members of the Lagos Assembly were seen in a celebratory mood, singing “On your mandate we shall stand” and praising the president as he walked towards his office. According to an attendee, the issues within the Assembly had been resolved, though no official statement has been released to confirm the details of the meeting.
The leadership dispute began on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed from his position as Speaker by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House. His removal was based on allegations of misconduct and other offenses. The Assembly then elected Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker, marking the first time in the history of the South-West state that a woman held such a position.
Obasa, however, rejected his ousting, claiming it was done while he was out of the country, and insisted that his removal was invalid. Despite his objections, 36 lawmakers loyal to Meranda maintained that her election was legitimate and that she was the rightful Speaker.
After weeks of tension, the Assembly saw a dramatic turn of events on March 3, when Obasa was re-elected Speaker following Meranda’s resignation from the post. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, stepped down from her role, allowing Obasa to assume the position once again. The Assembly then re-elected her as Deputy Speaker. The lawmakers praised Meranda’s leadership for fostering peace and harmony within the House and acknowledged her humility in stepping down.
This series of events highlights the internal power struggle and political dynamics within the Lagos State House of Assembly, with the resolution of the crisis appearing to restore stability to the legislative body.
