The immediate-past governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that “heaven will not fall” if the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly proceeds with impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike stated that there is nothing wrong with the lawmakers removing Fubara if they deem him guilty of impeachable offenses, including withholding their salaries for months.
“If you have committed an offense to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offense? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?” Wike asked.
He also dismissed warnings that impeaching Fubara could lead to political instability in Rivers State, saying, “I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”
Supreme Court Ruling on Rivers Political Crisis
Wike’s comments come after the Supreme Court issued key rulings on February 28, 2025, regarding the ongoing power struggle in Rivers State. The apex court dismissed Fubara’s cross-appeal challenging the validity of the House of Assembly under Amaewhule’s leadership.
The court ordered the assembly to resume sittings immediately and barred federal agencies—including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant General of the Federation—from releasing funds to Rivers State until it complies with judicial directives. Additionally, the court invalidated the local government elections conducted in the state on October 5, 2024.
Legislative Deadlock and Political Fallout
Following the ruling, Fubara announced his commitment to implementing the court’s decisions and directed the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to organize fresh local government elections, scheduled for August 9, 2025.
However, tensions remain high between the governor and the state assembly. The House recently issued an arrest warrant for RSIEC Chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), for failing to appear before lawmakers. Additionally, Rivers Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, invited the assembly for a meeting on March 10 to discuss the re-presentation of the 2025 budget and peace talks. The lawmakers, however, insisted that the governor must follow proper channels in his communication with them.
With Wike’s latest remarks, the political landscape in Rivers State remains volatile, as speculations of an imminent impeachment of Governor Fubara continue to grow.
