According to Naija247news, the standby force, comprising troops from member countries, will be deployed to hotspots in the region to combat terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of violent extremism. The move is part of ECOWAS’s broader strategy to enhance regional security and protect citizens from the growing threat of terrorism.

Naija247news understands that the activation of the force comes amid increasing attacks by terrorist groups, including Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and other armed factions. These groups have targeted civilians, security personnel, and critical infrastructure, causing widespread displacement and humanitarian crises.

According to Naija247news, ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, emphasized the urgency of the situation and called for collective action to address the security challenges. “The activation of the standby force demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of our citizens. We must unite to defeat terrorism and restore peace in our region,” Touray stated.

Naija247news reports that the standby force will work in collaboration with national security agencies and international partners to conduct counter-terrorism operations, intelligence gathering, and capacity building. The force will also focus on border security to prevent the movement of terrorists and illicit weapons across the region.

According to Naija247news, the activation of the force has been welcomed by security experts and stakeholders, who described it as a timely intervention. “This is a significant step towards addressing the root causes of insecurity in West Africa. However, sustained efforts and adequate funding are required to achieve lasting results,” said a security analyst who spoke to Naija247news.

Naija247news gathered that ECOWAS leaders have also pledged to address the underlying factors fueling terrorism, including poverty, unemployment, and political instability. They called for increased investment in education, youth empowerment, and community engagement to counter the spread of extremist ideologies.

As the standby counter-terrorism force begins its operations, Naija247news will continue to monitor its impact on regional security and provide updates on efforts to combat terrorism in West Africa. The activation of the force underscores ECOWAS’s determination to tackle security threats and promote stability in the region.
